In general, I have a high opinion of police officers, but every once in a while I meet one that challenges my perceptions. Instead of fighting actual crime, this specimen and two accomplices set up a speed trap half a block inside a 15 mph zone and spent a busy weekday morning distributing as many citations as possible to unsuspecting commuters like me, as we decelerated out of a 30 mph zone. From his smug demeanor it was apparent that he thought he was valiantly fulfilling his duty to promote virtue and prevent vice. That was the last day of August, 2000. Later, I obediently went to traffic school where I was told that police officers don't have quotas. On the bright side, it wasn't a total waste of time because I had fun drawing this effigy.
